Rights: For original stories, we buy first North American and foreign serial rights and an option on anthology rights. All other rights are retained by the author.

Needs: We pay well and expect to get our money's worth. Astonish us . . . please. We're looking for fiction that's literate, sophisticated, and out of the ordinary. Slice-of-life sketches are out, character sketches are out. Strange is in (but we're not looking for outright science fiction or fantasies set on one of the moons of Jupiter). Favorite recent movies will give you a clue to our taste: Moulin Rouge, Run Lola Run, Memento. Of course, it goes without saying: please read the magazine before submitting. We are not at this time accepting nonfiction or poetry submissions.

Length: 500 to 4000 words

Payment: For original fiction, 15 cents a word. For translations and reprints, 10 cents a word.

How to Submit: Electronic submissions are welcome, but send them as normal text, not as attachments. If you like, you can preface your story with a BRIEF cover letter, but DO NOT explain or summarize the story. Hard-copy submissions should be sent to Daniel Quinn, P.O. Box 66627, Houston TX 77266-6627. We prefer to reply to your submission electronically, so if you have an email address, include it in a cover letter or on the manuscript. If you don't have an email address, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with enough postage for whatever you want back—just a reply or the manuscript. (Writers from abroad are encouraged to send recyclable manuscripts with a letter-sized SASE and an International Reply Coupon or 80 cents in US postage—60 cents to Canada and Mexico. You can obtain US postage online from www.usps.com.) Manuscripts that arrive without either an email address or an SASE with the correct postage WILL NOT BE READ. If your story is accepted, you'll be asked to supply it in digital form on a floppy disk. We would rather not have to re-keyboard your story, but we will, of course, if we want it badly enough.

Response Time: One week for electronic submissions, 4 weeks for hard-copy submissions.
