Needs: Carriage House Review is a biannual literary magazine devoted to dark fiction. Our aim is to present previously unpublished writings in the spirit of such writers as Joyce Carol Oates, Ramsey Campbell, Shirley Jackson, Thomas Ligotti, Anne Sexton, Peter Straub, Flannery O'Connor, Henry James, and A.M. Homes. We believe that what constitutes "horror" or the macabre encompasses far more than one labeled shelf at the bookstore. For example, we consider some of the writings of such "literary" authors as Tennessee Williams and Katherine Anne Porter to be as dark and compelling as any genre-oriented writing. We are seeking intelligent, disquieting, disturbing, and well-written work. Beyond those considerations, the sky's the limit; please do not feel restricted to conventional "horror" themes. A familiarity with the works of at least one of the writers listed above or on our website is strongly recommended.

Currently seeking short stories (between 1,500 and 7,000 words), poems, and experimental fiction. For legibility purposes we encourage you to submit your writing in a standard submission format. $6 per accepted short story/experimental submission. piece. $4 per accepted poetry submission. Copyright reverts to author. We will be reading submissions for publication consideration for Issue II from November 15, 2001 through March 15, 2002. Projected date of publication for Issue II is June 1, 2002. Simultaneous submissions not accepted. Due to as-yet unsolved difficulties, Carriage House Review is failing to receive many submissions sent to us via email. We try to acknowledge receipt of email submissions within a few days. If you have not received such an acknowledgement within a week, please let us know via email. Hopefully your inquiry will reach us. If your submission requires a non-standard format or layout, we strongly recommend submitting it via hard copy (paper) to our P.O. Box. This will eliminate the possibility of browser conflicts altering the look of your work. Precise spacing specifications for special formats are recommended.

Due to volume, we request that you do not submit more than three short stories or six poems per any one submission reading period.

Please Note: Submissions on disk are not being accepted at this time. Any submissions that we receive on disk cannot be returned and will discarded.

Response Time: Response within 8 weeks of receipt. Please send SASE for response and specify whether you would like your submission returned or recycled.

Tips for Writers: Although we appreciate a diverse range of what could be considered dark fiction, we are seeking a certain tone. Familiarity with at least one of the authors listed on our website is highly recommended. We are seeking writing that moves and disturbs the reader...writing with a timeless, thoughtful feel. Flat-out horror is fine, but only if tempered with a certain restraint, an elegance or originality. Again, reading the works of such authors as those listed on our website is probably the easiest way to get a feel for what we're seeking.

Reading Fees:
Some writers have been sending us payment for reviewing their submissions. Carriage House Review does not charge fees to review submissions for publication. Please do not send reading fees with submissions. The only payment we exchange with writers is payment for accepted submissions. Any reading fees we receive will be returned.

Sample Copies/Subscription Information: Please see our website for information on obtaining Carriage House Review Literary Magazine.
